Dorje is playing outside with his friend Jason, I hear him shouting “DON’T KILL SNAILS, THEY ARE MOTHER EARTH’S CREATURESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!”

We had a whole discussion this morning on why its important to tell the truth. We were going through a few examples. To cut a long story short, he says to me,
“MUM, when I talk about my magic, that is real. I am telling the truth! All people have magic in them, even when they don’t know they have magic in them.”
“Everyone has love in them, and that is the most powerful magic.”
“So to teach them about love, I would give them a rose and take the thorns off!”

Let’s take this morning’s scenario …
Doje asks me slyly this morning “You know when I ask you for sandwiches in my lunchbox for school and you don’t?”
MUM “Ja?!”
Dorje “Well i swop my mango strips with Nicola for her cheesey toast”
Cheeky (and rather cunning) little shit! ()

Dorje was standing at the toilet weeing and messed a bit on the floor. So, he looks down, shrugs his shoulders and says to me, “I can’t control this thing!!!”
Hmmm, my mind wandered to the adolescent years … they already pull THAT line ()
()

Dorje’s mom recently got a book on Ayurvedic health and nutrition for children. As with most Ayurvedic books, there was a questionnaire to complete to determine the child’s dominant dosha/s – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.
His mom and I started to answer the questions together. However, each question turned into a debate. Are Dorje’s eyes “large” or “normal”? “How much larger do you want them to be!?” “They aren’t large – compare them to X!”. Does he have a “sharp, aggressive” intellect, or “calm and steady”? “Sharps and aggressive – he picks up things very quickly”. “No, but he’s calm and steady…”
We decided to answer the questions separately, and compare answers.
I completed the questionnaire, totted up the totals, and discovered Dorje was an overwhelming pitta/vata type. 21.5 vata, 22.5 pitta and a measly 2 kapha.
His mom disagreed.
According to her, Dorje was largely pitta and kapha, with vata trailing well behind. At least we agree on the fiery pitta!
I’m not sure why we view Dorje in such wildly differing ways. Perhaps he behaves differently with each of us? Or perhaps, to my pitta/kapha constitution, Dorje seems like a flighty vata, while to Anique’s pitta/vata, he seems a placid kapha.
It seems we need a 3rd opinion…

The joys of being in a beautiful and culturally diverse school. Dorje last week “MUM its not fair that Nicola is fasting!” “HUH?” I think to myself. “Why?” “Because she gets to go to the play ground to have fun first!” (They have to eat lunch before they can run outside) Hilare. So, now Dorje insists on fasting (well not for long)

When I put Dorje to bed I usually say “sweet dreams”. A while ago, Dorje told me he didn’t have sweet dreams – instead they were scary, monsters and the like. He “always” had scary dreams. I told him he could let go, not resist, not try to fight them, or be scared of them.
He didn’t think this was good advice!
We got into talking about how some people can control their dreams – skipping over awareness of one’s dreams! Dorje liked this idea more.
This evening I asked Dorje whether he still had nightmares. “No”, he said. “Now I control my dreams – I always win”. Dorje was highly convincing, but then he’s equally convincing as an orc telling me he’s about to chop my head off with his sword.
Still, according to him he’s mastered his nightmares. For those interested in following (or not) Dorje to mastery, the Tibetan centre in Cape Town is hosting a workshop on lucid dreaming at the beginning of October.

A few months ago Dorje and I went for a walk in Kirstenbosch, and up part of Skeleton Gorge. We were going to find the yeti on top of the mountain, and Dorje was particularly concerned about the yeti-Coke baby. This poor, mistreated child was fed Coke by its parents, and was in dire straits.
Unfortunately, it was late in the afternoon, and after much persuasion, we turned around to leave the baby to fend for itself with its dismal sugary diet a while longer.
